Local Enloe HS Student Selected for Prestigious Research Program at MIT

100 Top Achieving National and International Scholars will attend RSI for a 6 week Intensive Research Program at MIT

(Isstories Editorial):- Cambridge, Massachusetts Jul 4, 2024 (Issuewire.com) – Enloe High School senior Ryan M. Razon is one of one hundred student scholars selected from across the globe to attend the forty-first annual Research Science Institute (RSI) held in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  RSI is a six-week intensive research program offered by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) taking place this year from June 23 to August 3, 2024 on the campus of MIT. Each year, several thousand top achieving national and international scholars apply to be considered for the 100 available positions.  The highly selective application process consists of the following criteria: official high school transcript records, personal essays, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, research and leadership experience, and honors and awards in math and science.

Ryan stated, “I have a passion for math, computer programming, and dance.  For the past eight years, I have studied classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop and performed in productions for the community with my pre-professional ballet company.  I also care deeply about diversity and inclusion and hold leadership positions in both the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and NAACP junior chapters.”

According to Ryan, he has been writing code and programming since elementary school, and enjoys using code to solve difficult problems whether in his college-level math classes or to investigate real-world problems in the community.  “My generation will need to address serious threats like climate change, extremism and rising inequality. I believe that we can use technology to improve the lives of the people on the planet. I hope to perform research that provides practical applications that can directly help people. I aspire to use my talent and my art to create the change that I want to see in the world.

Razon has recently been recognized by United States Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd for his excellent academic performance and outstanding leadership.

“The Research Science Institute offers top academic math and science students the opportunity to experience graduate-level research and camaraderie with other talented high school STEM scholars,” said Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE President.

According to CEE, “RSI is an intensive, six-week program that combines on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research. Students conduct original, innovative research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals, and corporate research facilities under the mentorship of leading scientists, engineers, and researchers in the students’ respective areas of interest. In their final week, students demonstrate their research work through written academic papers and oral presentations to their peers and a panel of judges.”

Mark Kantrowitz, an RSI ’24 alum and a CEE trustee, is director of the 2024 summer Institute held from June 23 to August 3.  More information about RSI is at https://www.cee.org/programs/research-science-institute.
